When I first started shooting weddings, although I had great passion for the job, I couldn’t afford the best equipment. I found myself limited, since the quality of my images weren’t reflecting what I was visualizing in my head. For example, I bought a 50 1.4 (instead of splurging on a 50 1.2) hoping it would produce great images in low light situations. I thought I was getting a good deal in buying a second-rate version instead of the real thing. However, I wasn’t so happy with the results. It took some time, but I have been able to invest in better equipment. The old saying is true that you get what you pay for! My favorite lenses for wedding photography include the 35 1.4, the 50 1.2, the 85 1.2 and the 100mm 2.8 L macro. The 35 1.4 is a wider angle lens than the others, and is great for bridal party, family and venue shots. It’s also a fast lens & it focuses faster than the 50 and 85, so it’s useful in low light situations. The 50 1.2 is fantastic all around, and is great for bridal party and bride & groom romantic shots. The 85 1.2 is in a league of its own, it’s one of the sharpest lenses available out there. When it comes to detail shots (rings, bouquets, invitations, etc.), the 100mm 2.8 L macro is a great lens. Also, I love shooting with a wide open aperture, it’s a great way to get that bokeh! I highly recommend these Canon lenses, they are investments but are really worth it.

Sarah and John chose Chapel-Hill for their engagement pictures, and it’s easy to see why! The scenery was beautiful, from where we started the session in John’s backyard, to the botanical garden at the University. We’re really looking forward to their wedding in August!
